所谓的生物质，就是指包括植物材料和动物废料等有机物质在内的燃料，比如秸秆、稻壳、生物垃圾经过特殊的加工设备加工后形成的一定形状的含有热量的物质。反映在锅炉行业，其主要包括分为生物质蒸汽锅炉、生物质热水锅炉、生物质热风炉、生物质导热油炉等。
生物质锅炉可以大致分为以下三类：
名列前茅类：小型生物质热能锅炉。此种锅炉使用固化或气化的生物质燃料，提供热水形式的热能，它的优点是体积小，结构简单，价格低；缺点是，能量损耗大，燃料消耗量大，热能供给量低，无法满足热能需求量大的用户，该种锅炉目标为单户农村家庭的取暖和生活热水的供给。
第二类：大型生物质热能锅炉。此类锅炉目前并没有实际产品，主要原因是现有的技术并不完善，且对于生物质替代燃煤的我国政策不健全，因此，只停留在概念上。它所强调的是一种集中管理、集中控制的热能工程，锅炉仅作为其中的一个设备，来保证整个生物质热能工程的正常运行，因此，它对燃料、燃烧技术、配套技术、相关政策要求很高。
第三类：中型生物质热能锅炉。此类锅炉主要使用固化生物质燃料，提供热水或蒸汽。它的优点是技术比较成熟，能量损耗小，热能供给能力较强；缺点是部分锅炉燃料结焦，配套设计不合理。
